My name is Jan Agar Bergeron, and I am a veterinarian. I received my VMD degree from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1966. I did post-doctoral studies in hematology in the Department of Medicine at Penn's medical school, and then moved to research in private industry outside Washington, DC. Later I became an assistant professor of anatomy at Duke University Medical School and was the Managing Director of the Duke University Primate Facilitya colony of prosimian primates used for genetic and behavioral studies. I also conducted an equine veterinary practice in North Carolina and provided veterinary services for a small local zoo.
Later I joined the staff of American Veterinary Publications as an editor, and then practiced small animal and equine medicine in Bozeman, MT, following which I became a diagnostic pathologist at the Montana Diagnostic Laboratory. I continued in diagnostic pathology in Florida and Texas, and then moved to New Jersey to join Merck & Co as an associate editor of The Merck Veterinary Manual. I was responsible for the first electronic version of the MVM, which was published in 1993. I took an early retirement from Merck in 1997, and since that time have devoted my energies to complementary and alternative veterinary medicine.
In the fall of 1995, I designed the first version of the AltVetMed Web site in collaboration with Dr Susan Wynn, a holistic veterinarian from Georgia. The site was officially launched in January 1996, and is now the most visited holistic veterinary medicine site on the Web. I still host and manage AltVetMed, and in 1999, I became editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association.
I have a long-standing interest in computers, electronic publishing, writing, and editing and have nearly 10 years of experience with the Internet. It is this broad background and experience that has prompted me to offer Web site design and hosting services for veterinarians and animal-health-related businesses. My focus will be on veterinarians who practice holistically and use complementary and alternative therapies, and on businesses that approach animal health in a holistic manner.
It is my intention to offer simple, well-designed Web sites to promote the owner's practice, providing information on location, hours, services, staff, and fees (if so desired). My background in veterinary medicine makes me uniquely qualified to understand the needs of veterinarians when it comes to the design of their Web sites. Likewise, my experience with the Internet and the World Wide Web allows me to design Web sites that are functional and properly indexed for placement in the search engines.
Please look over what I have to offer, and if you would like me to design and host your Web site, let me know.
I also offer editing, writing, and desktop publishing services, including newsletters, brochures, client handouts, monographs, and books. If you need assistance in these areas, please feel free to contact me (Also see Fee Schedule). You can obtain a copy of my resume in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format by clicking here.
